What is meant by having freedom in Christ?

The dictionary's definition of Freedom is to have independence, the license to do as one wants; to give or place someone in the liberty to act. To understand freedom, one must have been in captivity or held or refrained at one given time.

For example, in order to obtain a license, one must understand that a law was put in place that restricts the individual the freedom to perform or act unless a license was given to that individual. One example is the license to drive a particular vehicle (motorcycle, automobile, truck, boat, plane, &c.). The law forbids or confines the individual from obtaining the freedom to perform on the desired vehicle or form of transportation. One reason can be because the individual is not disciplined or educated on the use of operating the desired vehicle and therefore the individual is bound to the limited means of transporting himself as a pedestrian (one who uses his feet for travel).

Whether consciously or unconsciously; aware or unaware, in order to understand the concept of freedom, one must understand that outside of freedom there is bondage. Freedom is the license of being released from that bondage.

All through history mankind has sought freedom. Many people have stated their desire to escape from their present state. Mentally, man has gone to the extreme of using past-times or even vises to mentally get away. Socially people have tried to become part of social relationships or gatherings in order to place themselves at a higher social level. Physically many have gone to extremes in order to relocated to obtain a better way of life; all this in order to be free. Freedom provokes the desire or a hunger to gain whatever is missing that is inexplicably deeper within our inner being. It's a void or emptiness that craves to be filled. Without God we are in bondage and many times unaware of that deep hunger there is within us a crying out for liberty. Unfortunately, when the concept of freedom is compromised or combined or attached to ignorance or a false teaching it is then converted to a false sense of freedom. Therefore, freedom must be attached to truth. Truth is the enlightenment without limits.

Freedom desires the nutrient that is only provided from the truth; a desire to be free from whatever hinders us or disallows our chance to obtain that license to act as we desire. That is to say, that it is truth that sets the captive or the one in bondage free. One may ask, 'free from what?' That is where sin comes in. Sin is bondage; sin is disobedience or being void from God's concepts, understanding, knowledge and laws. In Genesis 1:2 it states, the earth was void; with no form, until God spoke and said, 'let there be light'. Understanding then came into play and all that was void took form. What was void now had an order or structure, a concept was put in place that gave true definition to what exists today. It's not a theory or questions with no answers, but it's a reality to which where man can easily find ALL his answers to the questions, concerns or theories this world offers. Since mankind through Adam chose bondage (through sin) he now remains in darkness. John 3:19 says, And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. Mankind prefers to be in darkness away from freedom and so his own actions judges him to be sentenced to be bound to his own desire that is, away from the author of light (understanding or truth). Therefore, away from God, man remains in bondage and is not truly free. It is when he comes to God he can experience true freedom.

In Genesis 4:3-12, Cain was presented with the truth and rejected it by replacing it with his own type of false freedom (a counterfeit license to do his own will). The end resulted in the murder of his own brother and living a life as a fugitive or vagabond (one who runs away in sorrow or bondage). This is one example where man decided to act upon his own version of freedom or false sense of freedom.

One must rely on the truth in order to be totally free. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. Since mankind seeks freedom and seeks to fill the void within himself, the only one recorded in history to correct that void is God (Genesis 1:2).

Freedom cannot be attached to any bias, instead it must be pure so that we may have a complete understanding of what freedom is, since any other understanding will only result in captivity. John 8:34 explains that when we sin or disobey God, we have made the decision (or personal judgment) to accept the servant hood of being in the state of bondage. Contrary, if we decide to seek to be in obedience to God, Romans 6:18 says, 'Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness' (purity of heart and rectitude of life).

Therefore those who seek purely what is right seeks truth and obtains true freedom which can only be obtained through Jesus Christ the Son of the living God.

In Hebrews 12:6 God educates (enlightens) his children. God aids in freeing us from bondage. When we accept help from God, the word of God affirms that we are called his children and are participants of true freedom. John 8:36 says, If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. God provides freedom by having his son bring the truth to mankind. No one can come to God (the Father) but by His son Jesus Christ. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

The Bible states that, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16).
